Also called Muay Thai, Thai boxing is very much a part of the Thai culture and is a must-see in Bangkok.
Muay Thai begain as an early form of armed combat, was then banned in 1920 because of it’s physical repercussions, then revived again in 1937 with new rules to protect the boxers.
Spiritual Element to Muay Thai
Before each Thai boxing match, fighters kneel in a prayer to their teacher, a rite know as wai kru. This is followed by a dance to invoke the power of the ‘spirits’, a process called ram muay.
