Bangkok Shopping Tips

Bangkok is a shopper's paradise and here are some shopping tips so you can enjoy your Bangkok shopping experience.

Shopping Tip 1: Wear Comfortable Clothes

While you should dress conservatively, you also should dress comfortably for shopping sprees.  Bangkok is warm and humid year round, so wear light cotton clothes.  Wear flat comfortable shoes too for walking.  Wet-wipes or a small face towel is handy when shopping in outdoor markets.

Shopping Tip 2: Plan Your Shopping

Make a list of what you want to buy, then decide where you should go based on that.  Shop in markets early in the morning or latre in the evening, when the weather is cooler. Opt for air conditioned shopping malls to avoid the midday heat.  Avoid rush hours (7:3-am to 9am and 5pm to 6:30 pm).

Shopping Tip 3: Getting Around

Bangkok has a wide range of public transport; taxis, tuk-tuks, BTS Skytrain and Underground MRT.  The BTS are MRT are good ways to avoid traffic jams. Find out which shopping places are covered by the BTS and the MRT beforehand.

Shopping Tip 4:  Compare Prices

Shop around and compare prices. Make the most use of Tourist Discount Cards and VAT refunds.

Shopping Tip 5: Inpsect the Goods

Do a quality check of the goods before buying, especially at markets. Highly discounted items could be 'rejects', so unless you don't mind the flaws, you may want to buy these in shopping centres.  One tip is to tell the shopkeeper that you live in Bangkok and will return the goods for a refund if it is defective; this generally discourages them from selling you a defective item.
